The Farm-2-Library initiative is a partnership between Comfort Food Community and the Southern Adirondack Library System. It’s goal is to reduce food waste while improving food access and addressing food insecurity in rural food deserts. Four public libraries (Pember, Whitehall, Argyle, Schuylerville) distribute free fruit and vegetables gleaned from local farms each Tuesday and Friday from mid-July through mid-November.
1st and 3rd Saturday (11:30 AM–1:00 PM) “Meals with Love” and “Clothing Giveaway” ministries provide the opportunity of serving the poor and those who experience periodic hardships. Through this ministry, many members of our congregation (young people, men, and women) experience the joy that is inherent in serving others.
Sunday Morning (7:00 AM–9:00 AM) Various “Life Group Teams” prepare and serve a “JumpStart Breakfast” to the homeless and other members of the community. Participants are also provided the opportunity to hear a brief spiritual message and listen to a song or two presented by the CCOC Senior Choir.
As the need arises, Central also provides economic support to its members, sister congregations, and others.
The BackPack Program is designed to meet the needs of hungry children on weekends when school breakfasts and lunches aren’t available. The program provides bags filled with food that is child-friendly, nonperishable and easily-consumed. Bags are packed each week by school staff and discreetly distributed to participating children every Friday afternoon.
In partnership with Greenwich Central School administration, the Greenwich PTSA and the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, CFC fills backpacks each week that go home with students over the weekend and on breaks to make sure they come back to school fed and ready to learn.
